The video documents an autonomous ride in a Waymo vehicle, starting with booking the pickup through an app. It examines the car's exterior sensors, including lidar and camera hardware, as well as interior touchscreen controls for music and climate. The host also reflects on the driverless experience, vehicle route mapping, and future competition from Tesla's Cybercab as the trip concludes.
Taking a first ride with Waymo
The host orders an autonomous Waymo vehicle via the app, compares it to Uber, and gets picked up in a parking lot.
Vehicle sensors and in-car controls
A look at the Waymo vehicle's exterior sensors, interior climate and music controls, and remote monitoring capabilities.
Navigation constraints and driving experience
The host explains how the car maps its routes and reflects on the experience of riding in a driverless vehicle.
Future of robotaxis and Tesla competition
The host discusses the potential for safer roads and notes upcoming competition from Tesla's Cybercab as the ride concludes.
Today I'm gonna take you on my first robotaxi ride with Google's brainchild Waymo. The cost and the time to pick up are very similar to Uber. Now after ordering Waymo, it guided me to a safe pickup location. Here it comes, no driver, just me and a whole bunch of technology. The car has 29 cameras, 4 LiDARs, and 3 radars. You can adjust the music and temperature here for your comfort, and while the mics are off for privacy, the car is always monitored inside and out to be taken over by remote operators as and when needed.
Even with all of the technology and controls, it is only able to take the roads that it's already learned and knows. So even if there's a more direct way to go to your destination, it will go around on the roads that it knows. So is this the future? Honestly, it feels like it. The technology is incredible, the ride is smooth, and the potential to provide safer roads is huge. While Waymo has been the first robotaxi on the road since 2020, there's more competition to come with Tesla CyberCab event coming up in August, promising the same results with just 8 cameras and a car that costs less than $35,000.
